Lewis Hamilton has become the first F1 driver to reach 100 career victories after winning the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi.
Hamilton’s victory came after a less impressive run in qualifying – crashing twice and losing three positions to seventh on the opening lap. It was just his second win in 11 races, as his title race with Max Verstappen continues.
During the race, leader McLaren’s Lando Norris stayed out on slick tyres, eventually spinning off and allowing Hamilton, who was told to pit for intermediates by Mercedes, to move ahead. It was heartbreak for Norris who finished in seventh.
It’s difficult to put Lewis Hamilton’s 100 F1 victories into context as no-one in the history of the sport has ever reached three figures of race wins. Hamilton has won a race in all 15 of his F1 seasons, a feat no other driver has ever achieved. The Englishman passed Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins last year, also beating Sebastian Vettel’s total of 53 wins.Starting from 101 pole positions, the majority of Hamilton’s wins start from the favoured spot.
This recent win has moved the 36-year-old two points clear of title rival Max Verstappen in the championship, but offers no guarantee that he will come out on top to achieve his eighth world title. As Verstappen’s career is builds momentum, the two F1 drivers are not only competing on wins but also on the track itself, with a nasty crash at the Italian Grande Prix and several wheel-to-wheel battles heightens the tensions between the two.
Lewis Hamilton is now signed up with Mercedes until the end of 2023. He comments:
“I am so proud of everything we have done with Mercedes, on and off the track, and this is a special moment for everyone that has been part of it.”
