Emma Raducanu crowned winner of Sports Personality of the Year 2021

US open champion Emma Raducanu has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2021. The 19-year-old from Kent secured the most viewers votes, with Tom Daley and Adman Peaty coming second and third respectively.

Raducanu ended Britain’s 44-year wait for a women’s Grand Slam champion with her outstanding win at the US open in September this year, which followed a journey to Wimbledon fourth round in July on her Grand Slam main draw debut.

During the 2021 season, Raducanu moved her world ranking from 345 to an impressive 19, so becoming the first female to win the Sports Personality of the Year 2021 award since 2006, was a fitting tribute.

Accepting her prize via video call in quarantine in Abu Dhabi, where she is recovering from Covid-19, Raducanu said. “It’s such an honour just to be amongst these nominees, to win … it’s pretty amazing to me. I watched this growing up, so I’m really happy to join the past winners and I’m really happy for British tennis too. This past year has been absolutely insane.”

Manchester City and England team member Raheem Sterling, boxer Tyson Fury, and Paralympian Sarah Storey were also shortlisted for the main award.
