The Michelin Guide: The story behind the stars

When a restaurant is awarded a Michelin Star, it is a sign that the chef has succeeded at the highest level. For a restaurant, appearing in the prestigious Michelin guide for 1, 2 or even 3 Michelin Stars, can excel them to unbelievable levels of popularity.

What is the The Michelin Guide?

The Michelin Guide was created in 1900 by brothers Andre and Edouard Michelin – the famous tyre manufacturers. The brothers were looking for a way to encourage the then limited number of drivers to make journeys to the best hotels and restaurants across the country, wearing out their tyres in the process.

In 1923, independent restaurants appeared for the first time and off the back of the restaurant section’s success, a group of inspectors was soon hired to immerse themselves in the search for the best places to eat.

The guide focuses only on the food – decor and service don’t count. The inspectors pay special attention to the quality of the ingredients used, the creativity of the dishes, mastery of flavour and cooking techniques, value for money and consistency.

What is a Michelin Star?

In 1926 the Michelin star rating emerged for the best restaurants, and the 1, 2 and 3 Michelin star ratings that we know today were finally introduced in 1931.

3 stars means the restaurant served ‘exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey’, 2 stars ‘excellent cooking, worth a detour and 1 star, a very good restaurant in its category’.

The top country with the most Michelin star restaurants is Italy, then Spain, the UK, and the USA.
